Buildings LATAM: High Comfort, Energy Efficiency, and a low Carbon Footprint

A building that fulfils the Minergie LATAM standard is characterised by a range of features: It is energy- and water- efficient, contributes to the decarbonisation of the building sector, ensures healthy indoor air quality, increased comfort and value retention. The aforementioned properties are guaranteed by a catalogue of specifications, comprising both mandatory and optional requirements.

The Minergie Building in LATAM

  1. Solar control
During periods of high temperatures, the windows of the building are effectively protected from solar radiation. However, during the cooler months, the sun's heat is utilised for energy generation.
  2. Constant ventilation
The rooms are equipped with a ventilation system that ensures the air quality is consistently optimal. Furthermore, Minergie buildings are equipped with an adequate number of openable windows to facilitate air circulation and cooling on warm days.
  3. Healthy interior spaces
The use of materials containing harmful substances such as lead or high COV levels is prohibited. Noise protection measures can be credited on a voluntary basis.
  4. Efficient thermal envelope
Increased requirements for thermal insulation and the reduction of thermal bridges result in lower heating and cooling energy consumption.
  5. Minimal consumption of fossil fuels and use of renewable energies
The use of fossil fuels is prohibited, except for cooking purposes. The building is equipped with a photovoltaic system, which generates a portion of its own electricity.
  6. Efficient lighting, heating, cooling and DHW systems
Only LED lighting is permitted. All appliances and cooling systems must meet the highest energy efficiency ratings. It is optional to insulate hot water storage tanks and distribution systems.
  7. Promotion of sustainable materials
The carbon footprint of the construction must be calculated. The use of renewable materials (such as wood) is considered an elective requirement.
  8. Green, chemical-free outdoor spaces
The outdoor space is landscaped with native plants and shaded by bushes or trees. Green roofs and the avoidance of toxic substances can be counted as elective measures.
  9. Efficient use of water
A water use concept and efficient water fixtures ensure low water consumption. The use of rainwater or grey water can be additionally counted as an optional measure.
  10. Monitoring
Energy and water consumption are recorded annually. More extensive monitoring is installed on a voluntary basis.
